  • Environmental management and sustainability

  • The City of Sydney has taken the Zero Waste Sydney: Pledge on Single Use Items.

We’re committed to phasing out single-use items in our buildings and at our own venues and events. We’re seeking to eliminate or reduce the use of single-use items such as packaging, promotional flyers and single-use serveware.

Please note, on advice from the NSW Environment Protection Authority, compostable packing is not commercially recyclable in NSW. This includes products that meet the Australian Standard for commercial composting AS 4736-2006. These products often contain additives that provide water and grease resistance to food. The substances in this packaging may cause human and environmental harm.

The City of Sydney has developed guidelines to help find sustainable alternatives to single-use items and ensure that where waste is generated, recycling is maximised.

In line with the City of Sydney’s commitment and the NSW Government plastics ban, vendors must comply with NSW Government legislation and the City of Sydney’s guidelines for single-use items.

Vendors must not sell or provide single-use plastic in any of their packaging, including bottled water and other beverages. Vendors are also to be aware that for certain events, single use serveware of any kind may not be permitted and reuseable alternatives may need to be provided.
